New England Forestry Consultants Achieve "Green Certified" Resource Manager Status

GROTON, MA - New England Forestry Consultants, Inc. (NEFCo) is proud to announce that it is now a certified Resource Manager in the NWF/Smartwood forest certification program by the National Wildlife Federation.

The purpose of the Smartwood program is to recognize good forest management through credible independent verification of forestry practices and offers an opportunity for product labeling to reward certified landowners in the marketplace.

Through "green certification" of a Resource Manager and a chain of custody from the stump to the store, the Smartwood program can also insure that consumers have the option to buy wood products from forests managed in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The Smartwood Resource Manager assessments began in early October 2000.  Field assessments were performed by two and three member multi-disciplinary teams visiting and reviewing the management practices of the NEFCo foresters.  Not only were visits made to the woods to view NEFCo's on the ground performance, but NEFCo's business and office procedures were also evaluated by the reviewing team.

Upon completion of the assessment, NEFCo was awarded certified Resource Manager status.

"NEFCo has been providing high quality services to our clients for more than 50 years.  We were practicing sustainable forestry before the word 'sustainable' became popular, and the results of the Smartwood assessment have simply verified that fact," said Brooks McCandlish, a Vice President of NEFCo.

Landowners interested in "green certification" should contact their local NEFCo forester for more information.
